Home Ownership and Safe Shelter
For many families in rural America, home ownership seems an unattainable dream. The United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Mutual Self-Help Housing program, however, can make that dream a reality. For more than 33 years, USDA has provided funding to RCAC to provide technical and management assistance to Mutual Self-Help Housing agencies throughout the West.
RCAC also works with Community Housing Development Organizations (CHDOs) and other nonprofit housing developers to build housing for low-income residents.
Because homelessness is on the rise and many rural areas have shortages of safe, decent, affordable housing, RCAC works with nonprofit housing developers to build multi-family housing.
RCAC provides project development financing for single family homes, primarily self-help houses. With project development financing, self-help agencies can purchase land, develop infrastructure and prepare families for USDA mortgages. RCAC also provides project development financing for low- and very low-income units of multi-family housing.
As a National Housing Counseling Intermediary, RCAC works through affiliate agencies to council and educate renters and home owners. RCAC's Housing Counseling program builds the capacity of established and emerging housing counseling agencies, including tribal based organizations.
