The Department of Transportation is allocating $15 million for public transit projects in native communities.

The Department of Transportation is allocating roughly $15 million in competitive funding for transportation improvements for Alaska Natives and other tribal communities nationwide.

The Federal Transit Administration's (FTA) Tribal Transit Program helps fund transportation projects through capital and operating assistance for Native American public transit services, including bus, van and commuter service to communities which have previously lacked the services.

Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood stated the funds should help create employment opportunities, expand access to education and medicine and assist in rural economic development in other manners.

"Access to reliable, affordable transit is truly a lifeline in rural tribal and Alaskan Native communities that have traditionally had few transportation choices to get to work, school and other destinations," said FTA Administrator Peter Rogoff. "With gas prices rising, it's more important than ever to have viable transit options."

The deadline for proposals to receive funding through the program for tribal transit projects is May 10. Each year, the program provides $45 million to tribal communities in need.
