The Arizona-based nonprofit Prescott Free Clinic donated more than $500,000 to help construct the recently completed Community Health Center building in Cottonwood, according to the Verde Independent.

The facility was built with funding from the nonprofit and two other area sources, including Yavapai County, where Cottonwood resides, and will serve low-income residents of the rural community.

According to the newspaper, the health center is expected to serve nearly 3,000 patients, some of which are uninsured residents who can't afford health insurance. These patients, the paper says, can receive financial aid based on household income.

Peggy Nies, director of the community health centers in Yavapai County, told the newspaper in addition to regular medical checkups, the health center in Cottonwood will also offer women's health programs and mental health counseling. She added that poor rural residents are the main focus for the health center, but residents of all incomes are welcome to the facility.

Additional funding for the center came from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
