A recent survey found farmers and farmers markets participating in Double Value Coupon Programs increased access to affordable, fresh, locally grown food in their areas.

The success has led nonprofit organizations to plan an expansion. Already active in more than 20 states, the health and economic development assistance program will be extended to several more, including Hawaii and Colorado.

The survey found nearly 60 percent of eligible farmers reported increased sales after the incentive programs were implemented in their areas. Many indicated this encouraged them to increase production, add greenhouses and broaden product diversity.

Local economies and businesses near the farmers markets benefited as consumers spent more on market days. The program, a partnership between two nonprofit organizations, could significantly improve its impact by expanding into new regions.

Partnerships and similar approaches may become more important if government funding for community assistance and similar programs is constrained in the long-term by budget concerns.
