Native Nation Events hosted the fifth Annual Renewable Energy Projects in Indian Country Conference on the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Reservation.
Indian Country Today Media Network reports that more than 250 attendees were present to represent over 100 tribes.
Participants were educated on opportunities in renewable energy and networked with potential resources. The creation of sustainable economies through renewable energy projects for tribes nationwide was also discussed
Federal agencies present at the conference included the Department of Energy's (DOE) Office of Indian Energy Policy & Programs, the Office of Indian Energy & Economic Development and the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Rural Energy for American Program.
The San Carlos Apache, Navajo, Hopi tribes and the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation will all receive funding through government agencies, while renewable energy projects may qualify for additional tax credits and initiatives. The DOE Tribal Energy Program has already awarded funding for 159 tribal projects between 2002 to 2011, investing over $36 million.
