The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) offers a number of grants to small businesses that contribute to rural community development and help create jobs, and one family-owned business in Oregon has been able to double production as a result of the financing.

The agency is encouraging small business owners in rural areas to apply for its Value-Added Producer Grant (VAPG) which is offered by the USDA Rural Development. Sarah and her son Ben Deumling - who own Zena Forest Products in Willamette Valley, Oregon - were the recent recipients of the grant, and have been able to improve their company, while conserving precious natural resources around them.

The specialty mill manages 1,300 acres and produces native hardwood products in their region. The grant allowed the company - which began in 2007 - to cover upfront expenses that allow it to generate future revenue, the agency explained. The grant also enabled the small business to add new positions and double its production through a more efficient internal process. As a result, the business is now operating at sustainable levels.

Small businesses that are struggling to obtain financing can apply for loans and grants through several USDA programs. The financing is available to new and existing businesses, and may be used for a range of reasons, including equipment purchases, hiring new workers, innovations and technology purchases and start-up capital.
