California organizations are arguing over rural community development initiatives that threaten preservation sites, wildlife or access to clean water.
An ongoing property rights dispute in Napa County, California, between Pacific Union College and conservation group Save Rural Angwin is expected to continue into 2013, according to the Napa Valley Register.
Save Rural Angwin launched a dispute against the college after an "ecovillage" development project failed, and PUC attempted to sell a portion of the land to the city of Angwin for potential development, the news source explains. The conservation group then backed a ballot initiative, Measure U, designed to downzone the amount of land the college owns, the Register reports. This legislation would have reduced the amount of future housing development in rural Angwin, but the ballot was defeated.
PUC argued that the ballot amounted to unfair treatment of its own property rights, but the conservation group is expected to continue monitoring the college's intent to sell rural lands for housing development in the future, the news source explains.
Property and zoning disputes are common in California, as organizations argue over rural community development initiatives that threaten preservation sites, wildlife or access to clean water.
