U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development State Director Sarah Adler announced roughly $240 million was granted to rural communities in Nevada during fiscal year 2012 to help rural economic development.

"I am please that our team helped leverage the efforts of hard working communities and lenders throughout the state," Adler said at the Nevada League of Cities conference in Elko. "Rural communities make great contributions to our state and hold great promise."

One community in particular was lauded by Adler during the meeting. The City of West Wendover received the "From the Ground Up" award from USDA Rural Development for its work in improving its infrastructure.

Adler noted more than 800 families became homeowners during FY2012 thanks to agency funds, which included more than $120 million in housing assistance and $108 million for guaranteed mortgages for low-income and senior rural residents statewide.

Despite these funds, affordable housing needs persist in the state. Specifically, the Housing Assistance Corporation notes rural Nevada veterans are in substantial need of low-income housing options.
