The White House hosted a meeting with more than 50 local government and business leaders to discuss sustainable economic development in communities nationwide.
The conference convened on the third anniversary of the launch of the Partnership for Sustainable Communities, a group project involving the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), the U.S. Department of Transportation and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The initiative aims to better communities through long-term economic advancement.
"At a moment when federal funds are precious, we need to ensure every taxpayer dollar is working to bring private investment off the sidelines and into our communities and economy," said HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan.
Local government and business leaders discussed how sustainability strategies make regional economies more competitive in the global market. Additionally, they noted how coordinated investments can create jobs.
Many assistance programs are set to be more formally aligned. The agencies stated they will take the investments each makes into account when allocating grants and funding proposals.
