The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) recently met with local leaders and business owners to recognize accomplishments by small businesses in rural communities throughout the Midwest.

Between 2009 and 2011, USDA Rural Development's Rural Business Cooperative Service (RBS) has provided 12,214 guaranteed loans, direct loans and grants to more than 50,000 businesses and helped to create or save more than 266,000 jobs.

John Padalino, acting administrator of RBS, met with business leaders in Iowa and South Dakota and highlighted ways programs help improve economic conditions in rural communities.

In Montana, a family-owned cattle company, The Montana Wagyu Cattle Company, received a $49,000 grant to help expand their business and currently provides products to consumers and businesses throughout the nation. Another former recipient, Morris Manufacturing and Sales Corporation, had to lay off employees, but was able to rehire workers after assistance from USDA Rural Development.

"We know that to build a strong foundation for our country, we must continue to invest in rural communities and small businesses that create new economic opportunities for those who call rural America home," said Padalino.
