The U.S. Department of Labor announced the availability of nearly $60 million in grants for employment and training services through the Workforce Investment Act.

The grants will help develop academic, occupational and literacy skills of those living in tribal communities.

The additional money will help individuals be more competitive in the workforce and promote economies and social development in Native American, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian communities.

The Labor Department will award a total of 178 grants totaling $47.5 million, which will go toward implementing programs for adults, while $12.4 million is designated for youth programs.

"Tribal communities have an important role to play in our improving economy," said Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis. "The programs funded by the grants announced today will provide vital training for workers and youth in order to enhance the economic development of these communities."
