Twenty-eight rural groups sent a joint letter to President Barack Obama, asking that he work more to help rural communities in 2012.

More than two dozen rural organizations sent a letter to President Barack Obama asking him to focus more on rural issues in the coming year as he will soon conduct his annual State of the Union address.

In the letter, the 28 organizations asked the president to live up to his promise of helping rural communities recover from the financial crisis of the last few years.

The groups specifically requested President Obama focus on fixing issues including access to clean drinking water, developing wastewater systems, improving local healthcare facilities and reauthorizing the Farm Bill, which helps support many rural economies nationwide.

"As you prepare for your upcoming State of the Union Address, we ask you to remember the roughly 50 million Americans who live in rural areas," the groups stated in the letter.

Some organizations behind the letter include the Rural Community Assistance Partnership, Center for Rural Affairs, National Rural Development Partnership and Stand Up for Rural America.
