The study reported 55 percent of respondents believe nonprofit organizations and charities are highly effective at bringing about social change, although less than half were confident that such organizations spend funds and manage operations wisely. The recent 2011 Social Good Survey by Fenton and Globe Scan found most respondents plan to make charitable donations equal to or less than their contributions last year.

The survey found that respondents trusted nonprofit organizations to be agents for social change ahead of both corporations and governments. Researchers asked 1,131 Americans, age 18 years or older, who had made donations over a specified amount in the past year, about their plans for charitable contributions in 2012, and perceptions of nonprofit organizations.

To secure contributions, personal engagement is important, according to the report. About 44 percent of respondents indicated the organization's commitment to a cause is the deciding factor in determining their contributions.

With support expected to stay the same or decrease and government funding potentially restricted for economic reasons, charitable organizations such as housing counseling agencies and rural community development groups may need to make the most of the supporters they have.
