The U.S. Department of the Interior disbursed about $538 million to 34 Native American tribes and individual mineral owners this fiscal year from funds collected by the agency for energy production on public land and in offshore areas.

This is a significant increase over the previous year's total of $407 million, with funds going to community development programs aimed at improving healthcare, education and other infrastructure. The individual mineral owners often use their portion of the funds to support their families or fund business initiatives and capital investments.

"These revenues reflect significant domestic energy production and are a critical revenue stream for governments and American Indian communities, particularly in light of current economic conditions," Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar said.

The Department distributed more than $11 billion to states, tribal governments and other recipients, including the Historic Preservation Fund. This program provides matching grants to state and tribal offices seeking to preserve historic cultural sites, among other activities.
