HUD's program aims to help form sustainable communities through job creation and affordable housing.
On June 21, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Shaun Donovan revealed $67 million will be allocated to nonprofit organizations, municipalities and interest groups through the Sustainable Communities Regional Planning Grant (SCRPG) program.
Money from the program is intended to be used to develop more sustainable communities by promoting affordable housing and jobs, as well as promoting the formation of a clean-energy economy.
The funding from HUD's program will be awarded to several outlets, including private-public partnerships, state and local governments, metropolitan planning organizations, educational institutions and nonprofit organizations.
"On the heels of the second anniversary of the Partnership for Sustainable Communities these grants will further the Obama Administration's commitment to help communities nationwide improve access to affordable housing, increase transportation options, and lower transportation costs while protecting the environment and people's health," Donovan said.
The $67 million for the SCRPG program is part of $100 million in grant money from HUD's 2011 budget made available to its Office of Sustainable Housing and Communities.
