USDA Under Secretary meets with electric utility leaders to promote rural growth.
Dallas Tonsager, Under Secretary of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development, met with electric utility authorities and business leaders recently to discuss methods in which to promote job creation and rural economy strengthening.
The conference aimed to inform participants about USDA programs and federal options that help boost rural communities across the United States. Tonsager mentioned that the Rural Energy for America Program helps rural small businesses and agriculturists reduce energy consumption, create more jobs and boost economic revival.
"USDA Rural Development and the Obama Administration are reaching out to you, the local rural business owner and community member," Tonsager said. "We want to get your input on important issues affecting your communities and provide resources to assist with those issues."
In June, President Obama appointed the first White House Rural Council to promote policies that would enhance the quality of life and economic stance of rural communities across the country.
Currently the USDA's Rural Development sector has a portfolio of more than $155 billion in loans and guarantees, dedicated to improving rural communities, businesses, residents and farmers.
