While many rural communities benefit from the work completed by nonprofit organizations, the number of them in Utah fell considerably within the last four years.

A study by the Community Foundation of Utah (CFU) indicates the number of nonprofit organizations statewide decliend 38 percent since 2009.

"At the beginning of the recession, corporate giving in Utah tanked," CFU executive director Fraser Nelson told the Deseret News. "There is no doubt that the worst nonprofits hit were in rural areas. Our data showed this consistently."

According to the report, there are 3,568 nonprofit organizations in Utah, with most funded by international and human services. Those in rural areas have experienced more challenges due to the decrease in these groups, as they rely significantly on local contributions from them.

Numerous rural small businesses rely on assistance from federally funded programs and grants. However, a recovering economy could result in a bounce back in nonprofit organization activity. Organizations including Road Home and the Head Start Program have sought out alternative ways to collect funding.
