Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar recently highlighted a New Mexico-based project which is considered a prime example of a government-funded plan that can help local communities nationwide improve economically.

The construction of a pedestrian bridge connecting the town of Aztec to the Aztec Ruins National Monument, as part of the White House's America's Great Outdoors initiative, is expected to create a significant amount of job opportunities for state residents.

Access to the Aztec Ruins National Monument is being improved through collaboration between federal, state and local governments with the park management. The improvement is expected to increase engagement of the local population and draw more visitors.

"My staff and I have been asking each governor for the most promising projects to support in their states, and we will do all we can to help move them forward," Salazar said. These projects are also supported by tribal-elected officials and area community organizations.

The Department of the Interior stated it will work with the National Park Service, Bureau of Land Management and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to execute this project and others like it nationwide.
