Considered among the more successful programs the initiative has produced, these efforts are focused on the Phoenix Rio Salado Habitat Restoration Area and Lake Havasu.
Leading up to the 50-state report on the America's Great Outdoors initiative, Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar recently revealed two Arizona
community development programs that will be featured prominently.
Considered among the more successful programs the initiative has produced, these efforts by the Department of the Interior (DOI) are focused on the Phoenix Rio Salado Habitat Restoration Area and Lake Havasu.
Aside from continuing public and private efforts to improve the fisheries habitat, shoreline access and recreation opportunities, the project is planned to support local economic development and educational opportunities.
The Nina Mason Pulliam Rio Salado Audubon Center is located less than two miles from downtown Phoenix, located near the center of a 600-acre park on the Salt River. The nature center supports efforts to restore and revitalize the river and surrounding area and create urban parkways and fishing opportunities for local residents and visitors.
The program also includes a push to educate 25,000 area students in basic environmental literacy by 2015, by recruiting them to build regional trails, restore avian and aquatic habitat and monitor environmental resources.
Similarly, the Lake Havasu project will recruit a Youth Conservation Corps team to perform land-based restoration and enhancement activities.
