Jobs4America wants to provide 100,000 customer service jobs for U.S. residents by 2013.

Jobs4America, a coalition of businesses which operate call centers, announced recently it intends to create 100,000 customer service positions for U.S. residents by 2013.

According to reports, the group aims to generate new customer service jobs for American residents only, after many firms outsourced the work to nations such as Jamaica and India in recent years.

Federal Communications Commission Chairman Julius Genachowski told USA Today these positions could be created if high-speed broadband internet service is extended to rural areas.

"We've been pushing broadband deployment and adoption so strongly because it's essential to job creation," Genachowski told the newspaper. "We see broadband expansion creating new jobs, and on-shoring jobs that have moved overseas."

David Butler, director of the University of Southern Mississippi's Call Center Research Laboratory, told the paper income for customer service positions is better than minimum-wage salaries.

Jobs4America Executive Director Jim Kohlenberger told the Wall Street Journal broadband expansion is required to help improve the economy in rural communities.
