A new proposal in Colorado is designed to protect rural communities from the effects of gas and oil drilling.

Colorado lawmakers responded to rural communities and environmentalists concerned about increased gas and oil drilling near homes by proposing new regulations.

Under the proposals, drill operators will be required to abide by new setbacks of 500 feet throughout the state, rather than 350 feet in urban areas and 150 feet in rural locations, according to the Summit County Voice. The new proposals will also make Colorado the first state to require samplings of water both pre- and post-drilling. This will ensure aquifers are protected and residents will still have access to clean water system services.

However, environmental groups, such as Conservation Colorado, say the new proposals are still inadequate.

"After months of hearing from stakeholders and thousands of citizens across the state who want greater setbacks, the governor's proposal would still allow heavy industrial activity near our homes and families," the group said. "As local governments act to address drilling impacts near communities, these proposed weak regulations raise concerns of the ability and political will of the administration to properly regulate drilling and fracking in our state."

Many states, such as Alaska, are exploring new ways to utilize their natural resources and boost their economies. However, many of these resources are located near communities or sacred lands, and obtaining them may result in environmental damage. As a result, many states are fighting to preserve these resources.
