U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Secretary Tom Vilsack recently announced the establishment of a new advisory board assigned to ensure that the department's programs benefit Native Americans and encourage their participation.

The department will be accepting nominations for the advisory board until January 20. The Council for Native American Farming and Ranching will work with USDA agencies, including the Farm Service Agency and the Office of Tribal Relations, to ensure tribal governments and Native communities and individuals are helped by USDA housing, rural community development and other initiatives.

USDA notes the National Congress of American Indians reports the agricultural industry employs the second-highest number of residents of Indian Country.

"The Council for Native American Farming and Ranching will help native governments, businesses, farmers and ranchers partner with USDA to create jobs, drive economic growth and strengthen tribal communities," Vilsack said.
