The high energy prices of Alaska are hampering rural communities.

Rural communities in Alaska would benefit greatly if energy costs were reduced, Senator Lisa Murkowski stated recently, adding she wants to do so through renewable energy projects.

During a Senate Appropriations Committee markup regarding funding increases for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, Murkowski stated that Alaskans are lacking financial stability due to high energy costs.

Murkowski noted that using renewable energy instead of diesel generation and finding ways to lower energy costs will boost local and state economies and is the best course of action for rural communities. She added government policies should offer more consistent and reliable funding for renewable energy technology.

"I find it unconscionable that so many rural Alaskans are facing high prices on heating oil they can barely afford," said Murkowski.

According to AAA's Daily Fuel Gauge Report, Alaska's average gas price is $3.98 per gallon, which is the second-highest state cost in the country.
