Lieutenant Governor Brian Schatz announced the distribution of environmental grants to various Hawaiian nonprofit organizations.

Hawaiian officials recently announced $600,000 in funding for 11 nonprofit organizations to conduct environmental projects and programs on the Leeward Coast of Oahu.

Lieutenant Governor Brian Schatz announced the distribution of the Supplemental Environmental Project (SEP) grants on behalf of the Department of Business, Economic Development & Tourism (DBEDT) and the Department of Health.

The Hawaii Fair Share Initiative, a state-run program, worked with state agencies and nonprofit organizations to determine the allocation of grant money based on project needs.

"We are pleased to be able to support these projects," said DBEDT director Richard Lim. "[These nonprofit organizations] were selected because they will have a positive environmental impact on Leeward communities, and help further the goal of protecting and enhancing the public health and the environment, as well as educating children, families and the community about important environmental issues."

The grants will provide funding for many projects including implementing patrol to prevent illegal waste dumping and teaching rural residents about the importance of sustainability.
