In celebration of Earth Day, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development announced plans for projects to improve water and
wastewater services across the country.
Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said that more than $150.8 million will go toward improving water quality for those living in rural communities throughout the country to provide a safer and healthier environment.
The money will fund 54 water and wastewater projects in 33 different states, including Alaska, Arizona, California and Washington. Additionally, nearly $22.5 million will go toward technical assistance training through the Technical Assistance and Solid Waste Management Programs.
"It is critical that communities across the country have reliable, clean and abundant water," said Vilsack. "These water and wastewater projects demonstrate how USDA is helping provide critical services to rural communities that have the added benefit of protecting the environment.
The water quality improvement projects are expected to improve the local economies in rural communities and to improve the quality of life for residents and businesses.
