The U.S. Department of Agriculture has given more than $13 million in grants to several universities to help solve water-related problems nationwide, including in rural communities.

The agency's National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) provided 26 grants to more than 20 schools, which will use the funds to research ideal ways to solve surface water and groundwater issues in certain areas around the country.

Roughly $9 million in grants were given to the universities by NIFA's National Integrated Water Quality Program. Additionally, NIFA provided $4.4 million to schools through its Agriculture and Food Research Initiative Agricultural Water Sciences program.

"American communities and rural areas depend upon a safe and reliable water supply," said Agriculture Deputy Secretary Kathleen Merrigan. "These research projects will help farmers, ranchers and community leaders enhance local economies and environments in agricultural and rural communities."

Some schools that received funding include the University of California, Riverside, University of Hawaii at Manoa and Montana State University.
