Congressman Denham's bill would create many jobs for residents living in his district.

Congressman Denham's bill would create many jobs for residents living in his district.

Congressman Jeff Denham of California stated Tuesday his new legislation proposal, H.R. 869, would not only supply additional water to rural households in the 19th congressional district, but also create jobs and bolster the economy.

According to Denham, the bill would create 70,000 acre feet of additional water for the Central Valley, while also generating 10,000 additional megawatt hours per year of renewable, green energy. Specifically, the legislation would allow for the Merced Irrigation District to raise Lake McClure's water level 10 feet for two months during a high water year.

"My legislation before the committee today is a simple, common-sense bill that will provide for much needed water storage during wet years in the Central Valley of California," Denham told members of the Natural Resources Subcommittee at a legislative hearing.

He added the state would see a rise in employment opportunities by passing the bill, as well as boost California's agriculture industry.

Drought conditions have long been an issue in California. Approving Denham's proposed legislation may ensure substantial amounts of water is stored for rural communities should dry conditions persist in the future.
