The Alaska Gov. will allocate some resources to rural development projects for fiscal year 2014.
Alaska Gov. Sean Parnell released details of the state's proposed budget for fiscal year 2014, which aims to set aside millions for several economic rural development initiatives.
For example, Parnell proposed a $56.5 million allocation toward village safe water projects, many of which would require state funds in addition to federal grants and loans to complete, according to the Alaska Journal of Commerce.
In addition, the governor is requesting a separate $5 million allowance to develop new water-related technology and wastewater systems designed to meet the needs of small rural communities throughout the state.
Managing water resources is not the sole aim of Parnell's budget. He also proposed allocating $50 million toward natural gas pipeline projects, the Commerce Journal reports.
While Alaska is rich in many natural resources, such as natural gas, many of these energy sources are exported. However, many companies have chosen Alaska for pilot energy programs, such as those involving wind turbines, to help lower the high energy costs most rural Alaskans pay.
