Colfax, California is applying for various state and federal grants so they can complete the renovation of the city's water treatment plan.
The city of Colfax, California, is seeking almost $6 million in state and federal funding for improvements to the city's wastewater treatment plant, reported the Colfax Record.
Funding would be used towards the lining of a leaky sewage storage pond in Colfax's wastewater treatment plant, part of a renovation of the city's sewer lines and sewer collection systems that began in 2009. City Manager Bruce Kranz told the newspaper the city has already applied for a $1 million grant through the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Rural Development program and is also hoping to receive a $3 million grant from the state water board.
Kranz also told the paper that while Colfax received a $7.5 million state loan in 2009 for upgrades to the water plant - an improvement the Regional Water Quality Board mandated in 2001 - there was not enough funding to line the last storage pond at the plant.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, functional and hygienic water and sewage treatment services can help prevent waterborne diseases which can easily spread due to temperature changes or frequent precipitation.
