The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced funding for
water assistance programs, which it states should create jobs and improve water and wastewater systems in rural areas of 26 states.
Sewer treatment, including the installation of new sewer lines and associated lift stations, is one project being funded by USDA. The measures are meant to improve quality of life and encourage further economic development in the assisted areas.
"Constructing and improving rural water systems benefit communities by providing reliable access to clean water and create jobs that strengthen economies," said Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack.
The funds also will be used to support projects such as the construction of new storage facilities, distribution line and other components of water systems. Water quality improvements, efficient water use and funding for distribution cooperatives also are supported.
The USDA is expected to make additional announcements in the near future, revealing other programs and plans to aid rural Americans in the construction and improvement of needed infrastructure.
