Senator Harry Reid helped introduce legislation regarding water infrastructure projects in communities with failing water and wastewater systems.
Senator Ben Cardin of Maryland, chairman of the Senate Water and Wildlife Subcommittee, introduced legislation to improve water infrastructures of communities nationwide, which would spur economic growth.
The Water Infrastructure Resiliency and Sustainability Act of 2011 aims to repair and upgrade infrastructures in communities needing improved water systems. Cardin stated the bill would not only fix aging and deteriorating infrastructures, but also provide jobs and modernize local economies.
"It is no secret that America's current water infrastructure is in poor condition," said Cardin. "We need to return to a time when all Americans can turn on their tap and expect clean, healthy water for them and their families."
Senators Harry Reid of Nevada and Barbara Boxer of California, who helped Cardin introduce the legislation, said the bill should substantially assist communities in their respective states where infrastructures improvements and jobs are needed.
The U.S. Conference of Mayors reports that for every job created in the water and wastewater industries leads to four more employment opportunities in other areas of the economy.
