On October 10, the National Association of Realtors hosted a forum regarding affordable housing for low-income families.
The meeting, "Bring Workers Home," united local and federal officials working on workforce housing development.
"Millions of households are struggling to meet relatively high housing costs and the country lacks an adequate supply of affordable workforce housing," said Moe Veissi, president of NAR. "For some of the people that provide vital services in communities such as teachers, firefighters and police officers, it is difficult to afford homes near their workplaces."
While many in the workforce are able to commute from outlying communities to achieve lower rent, it can be a major inconvenience for people, he added.
Development of additional housing, stabilization strategies, foreclosure prevention programs and outreach and assistance were discussed at the forum.
Many local businessmen and women, the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the Washington State House Finance Commission attended the event.
Though progress has been made, raising awareness of the lack of affordable housing is essential for progress.
