Some Native American housing advocates have indicated progress has been made in providing affordable housing on reservations across the U.S. However, several of these communities are still dealing with various housing issues, according to a report.

Indian Country Today Media Network reports various challenges remain for tribal communities nationwide. Specifically, the source noted the 200-plus tribal communities in Alaska face numerous housing challenges, including unsanitary living conditions and deteriorating government-built homes.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has funded many affordable housing projects in the state during the past few decades. The news source indicates, though, that many of these homes are deteriorating, leaving a number of Alaskan Natives living in decrepit conditions.

Mellor Willie, executive director of the National American Indian Housing Council, told the source a lack of investment from local banks is a prime reason for the shortage of affordable housing development and upgrades in these communities.

To help communities such as those in Alaska, HUD is studying tribal community needs, including where Native American programs related to housing assistance and development are needed.
