The Sacramento/Yolo Mutual Housing Association received a grant for the first zero-net community for low-income families in rural parts of Woodland.
The Daily Democrat reports that the Yocha Dehe Community Fund gave the association $30,000 to help address the need for affordable housing in Yolo County. Data shows nearly 5,000 agricultural workers are in need of housing. The funds will also help create and mend the community.
The source says that the development, called Spring Lake, will have 101 apartments ranging from two to four-bedroom units. Around 60 percent of them will be strictly available for farm workers and their families.
"We are pleased to be a partner in this wonderful project that will help individual families in need and, at the same time, will contribute to our entire community," Marshall McKay, Yocha Dehe Wintun Nation Tribal Chairman, told the Daily Democrat.
He also noted that the project parallels with the Yocha Dehe Community Fund's mission to provide support to programs that help people improve their own abilities while also promoting responsible stewardship of the environment.
