Foreclosures fell markedly in 2011 from the year before, but are expected to continue at a steady pace this year.
Roughly $2 million has been made available to nonprofit organizations, local governments and other groups by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) for
housing counseling and training to help homeowners, homebuyers and renters.
HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan said the grants should help consumers in need of
housing assistance receive substantial aid from one of the many experienced counseling agencies nationwide.
"These funds for training will help HUD-approved housing counseling organizations be better prepared to offer valuable services assisting families in making better choices in buying or renting homes and in helping thousands of struggling homeowners avoid foreclosure and remain in their homes," said Donovan.
Millions of Americans are in need of housing counseling, as roughly 1.9 million foreclosures took place last year, according to a report by RealtyTrac. The real estate data firm states foreclosures are likely to continue at a steady pace in 2012.
