The Senate recently passed a bill that will allow the Quileute Tribe to move out of potential tsunami zones in Washington and to relocate to higher grounds.
The bill backed by Senator Maria Cantwell allows the Native American tribe to escape the risks of a tsunami generated in the Pacific Ocean, as their current grounds are victim of frequent flooding of the Quillayute River. Congressman Norm Dicks worked with Cantwell to introduce the proposal in March 2011.
H.R. 1162 officially passed the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate unanimously and is now being handed to President Barack Obama for approval.
Details of the bill include authorization to relocate tracts, including the tribe's school, daycare center, government offices and the construction of homes.
"It is important in times like this that Congress does act," said Cantwell. "That we break gridlock and move forward. And for the Quileute Tribe, a tribe that gained much national notoriety in a recent movie series, what’s really important is not that notoriety but the fact today that people have come together to help them move to safer grounds."
