A recent survey by Survey Sampling International reveals that nearly 73 percent of respondents said they had never heard of the Home Affordable Modification Program (HAMP) and the Home Affordable Refinance Program (HARP).

After falling short of helping a projected number of homeowners, the programs were updated, allowing millions of additional homeowners to qualify for mortgage modifications and refinancing also while providing more affordable housing.

Additionally, the survey found that 62 percent of respondents were unaware of new government programs that make home buying more affordable.

Many rural homeowners could prevent foreclosure should they become more educated about programs such as HAMP and HARP.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Rural Housing Service has worked with the federal government in the past to help rural homeowners receive assistance through HAMP.
