HUD releases funds for Native American housing and economic development.
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) granted approximately $8.3 million to Native American communities in nine states to progress housing and economic development for low- and middle-income families.
HUD Secretary Shaun Donovon said the funds will promote long-lasting housing and economic solutions for Alaska Native and Native American tribal communities.
"Housing and infrastructure needs in Indian Country are severe and widespread," Donovon said. "I’m inspired by the work the tribal communities are taking on to leverage these funds and get their communities on the right track."
These grants will help many rural communities. In White Earth, New Mexico, tribal members will have the opportunity to enhance their trade skills and job opportunities at a new workforce development center. Additionally, the Quechan Tribe of California will restore high-traffic roads and sidewalks in low-income neighborhoods.
In addition to roads, housing and economic growth, the grants will be used for water and sewer system replacement and improvement and ultimately enhance the health and agriculture of Native American communities.
