George Yedinak stated affordable senior housing is needed in many rural areas.
Senior Housing News editor-in-chief George Yedinak recently wrote an editorial regarding the current challenges many seniors living in rural communities face in terms of finding affordable housing.
"The lack of senior housing options is a national problem but is exacerbated when looking at options with a local, rural focus," Yedinak said. "Concepts for senior housing and care that are designed for metropolitan markets, may not work in the rural landscape and presents policy, funding and implementation challenges to seniors in these areas."
Yedinak stated substantial expenses related to travel and technology can add up for many rural seniors, in turn making their housing more expensive, particularly for elderly citizens without family members nearby to help.
He ultimately suggested the government should play a bigger role in trying to provide assistance to rural seniors to make their living situations more economically viable.
Many seniors nationwide are dealing with financial issues related to their homes. A report by the American Association of Retired Persons' Public Policy Institute states more than 30 percent of seniors' household income is devoted to housing costs.
