HUD and HHS are funding a rental assistance program for low-income disabled Americans.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) will collaborate on a program to extend affordable housing assistance to low-income Americans with disabilities.

The groups announced they will devote $98 million in funding to 13 state housing agencies for rental assistance. Many individuals likely eligible for the program are extremely low-income and disabled Americans who face a high risk of homelessness. The housing agencies selected for the program will help the federal agencies identify and contact those with disabilities who may be eligible for the program.

"By working together, HUD and HHS are helping states to offer permanent housing and critically needed supportive services to offer real and lasting assistance to persons who might otherwise be institutionalized or living on our streets," said HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan. "We're helping states reduce health care costs, improving quality of life for persons with disabilities, and ending homelessness as we know it."

A number of federal agencies have collaborated in recent years in an effort to pool funding and take advantage of their respective resources to provide more affordable housing assistance to low-income Americans, build the nation's infrastructure and promote job creation. For instance, the White House Council on Environmental Quality, Environmental Protection Agency, the HUD and the Surgeon General recently announced a partnership to improve the quality of homes nationwide.
