USDA RD funding will allow one Colorado organization to construct new farm labor unit complexes.
The Colorado Community Resources and Housing Development Corporation has been awarded funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development (USDA RD) to construct farm labor housing complexes, according to the High Plains Journal.
The state organization was extended a $2 million loan and a $1 million grant, which will enable it to provide affordable housing assistance to farm laborers. The funds will go toward the construction of a 50-unit farm labor complex in Fort Morgan, the newspaper reports. Following construction of the three- and four-bedroom units, the state will have 12 farm labor housing complexes throughout the state.
The USDA RD program has been instrumental in extending financing and grants to rural communities for the purposes of constructing, purchasing and rehabilitating rural, multifamily, farm labor housing properties in a number of states. However, many communities are concerned that future funding will be endangered as Congress prepares to slash the budgets of many federal agencies.
Although the USDA has already extended millions in grants and loans in 2013, and has opened up credit access for agricultural communities, it is expected to see its federal budget reduced over the next several months.
