USDA RD funding helped small rural communities throughout the U.S. grow in 2012.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Rural Development (USDA RD) funding for several rural initiatives helped pave the way for stronger communities in 2012, the agency announced.
The USDA RD released the results of its 2012 investments, and noted that it extended $176 billion in loans to provide affordable housing assistance, support programs to provide clean water system services to rural communities and promote job creation. The agency also provided billions to help lower utilities costs for residents in many underserved communities.
"Thanks to our loan, grant and technical assistance programs, USDA Rural Development is helping residents and rural enterprises thrive, and we are laying a strong foundation for rural America's future," said Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack.
The USDA RD is also seeking funding requests from states that seek to offer affordable housing options to rural residents. The agency consistently accepts requests for a variety of housing issues, ranging from building green energy homes to repairing or refurbishing complexes slated for low-income residents or seniors.
Despite funding, recent data reveals that affordable housing remains a problem in the United States, and particularly, in rural areas. Data from the Rural Housing Coalition found that rural communities are four times more likely than urban areas to have at least 20 percent of their population living in poverty.
