The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is currently accepting applications for grants that will help improve housing in rural communities across the country.
USDA Rural Development is offering Housing Preservation Grants to local governments, public agencies, Native American tribes, nonprofit organizations and faith-based organizations. The grants are to be distributed to homeowners or owners of multifamily properties that are rented to residents with low to very low incomes.
Grants can be used toward weatherizing and repairing existing structures, installing or improving plumbing or providing access for disabled residents. The grants are expected to help with job growth and stability to those living in rural communities.
"Strong rural communities are a key to a stronger America, and safe, sanitary housing is crucial to improving the quality of rural life," said Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack. "These grants to qualified intermediaries help limited-income rural homeowners make necessary repairs and improvements for safer, healthier and more energy-efficient dwellings."
