U.S. Senator Jeff Bingaman announced that the Mescalero Apache Housing Authority was recently awarded a $2.5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
The funds were awarded through HUD's Native American
Housing Assistance and Self-Determination Act (NAHASDA) Indian Housing Block Grant Program. The program was previously made up of many separate programs but was recently replaced with the block program which was granted to the Mescalero Apache Tribe of New Mexico.
The grant will help create and improve affordable housing in the rural communities including new construction, acquisition, modernization or rehabilitation of both rental and owner-occupied housing.
"This federal grant will help the Mescalero Apache Tribe meet the housing needs of the community," said Bingaman.
