After hearing the Department of Housing and Urban Development's (HUD) proposed budget for fiscal year 2013, the Native American Indian Housing Council (NAIHC) is requesting additional funds under the Native American
Housing Assistance and Self Determination Act (NAHASDA).
The proposed budget would give $650 million in
Native American housing assistance, but NAIHC is requesting a larger $875 million to make a larger impact as the need for housing continues to increase. The push for more financial help comes as the NAHASDA approaches reauthorization in 2013. To determine the need of additional funding, HUD is conducting a study on Native housing needs, using input from tribes.
The discussion on the need for additional financial help began at the "Raising the Roof: A Discussion of Indian Housing" meetingat the Native American Finance Officers Association (NAFOA)'s conference. While disagreeing that the budget proposed a sufficient amount of assistance, a chairwoman for the NAIHC said they are thankful for HUD's help.
"The federal Office of Management and Budget did a wonderful job to keep that amount," NAIHC chairwoman Cheryl Causley told Indian Country Today Media Network. "We fared better than a lot of organizations."
