The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) recently announced that $404 million in Indian Housing Block Grants (IHBG) will be distributed to roughly 300 tribes in 27 states.
The Native American
housing assistance is given out each year to Indian tribes or their designated housing entities for additional affordable housing.
According to HUD more than $250 million in IHBG funds will be allocated among Native American communities in 2012. The funds are meant to benefit low-income families living on tribal reservations or in other communities in need of housing assistance. The agency says each grant is based on local needs as well as housing managed by the tribe.
"These funds are making a real difference in tribal communities each and every say," said HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan. "Projects include affordable housing, infrastructure upgrades, community centers and safety programs that every community needs to thrive."
The agency indicated it will continue efforts to provide assistance to Native American communities who need help developing their economies.
States with grant recipients include Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming.
