Together, they plan to provide financial education, homeownership outreach, down payment grants and credit counseling for 24 months. The efforts, according to projections, may reach as many as 700 Native Hawaiians. Aid provided will include counseling and a savings matching plan to help families purchase homes in the state.
The State of Hawaii Office Hawaiian Affairs (OHA) recently announced a partnership with the Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement (CNHA), according to the Sovereign Councils of the Hawaiian Homelands Assembly.
Together, they plan to provide financial education, homeownership outreach, down payment grants and credit counseling for 24 months. The efforts, according to projections, may reach as many as 700 Native Hawaiians. Aid provided will include counseling and a savings matching plan to help families purchase homes in the state.
"OHA is dedicating $500,000 toward the Native Hawaiian Family Finance Project," said Rosalee Puaoi, CNHA project manager. "It’s great to be working with our trust agency, and definitely on a project that will improve income situations and family finances."
According to Puaoi, the long-term economic benefits for the state will be substantial as more families are able to invest in buying or purchasing homes.
While the program's primary purpose is to provide
housing counseling and related services to families in need, supporters indicate this will lead to improved financial situations for those helped. As a result, they are expected to contribute more to the local economy in the long-term.
