The USDA proposed rules to be implemented as part of the Substantially Undeserved Trust Areas initiative, which would provide disadvantaged communities with infrastructure funding.
New rules were proposed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture aimed to improve the quality of life and economies of Native Americans, Alaskans, Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders living in disadvantaged areas.
The rules for the proposed Substantially Undeserved Trust Areas initiative were created through in-person consultations and webinars with tribal leaders and members, as well as other interested parties, to determine how their communities can be improved.
"I invite tribal leaders, tribal members, interested citizens and stakeholders to provide their comments and views on this important rule," said Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack. "This rule will provide those located in Trust Areas with better access to infrastructure funding to serve tribal communities seeking to build modern utility infrastructure."
If approved, the program would provide communities in need with low-interest loans for infrastructure improvements with extended repayment terms, and assist communities with economic needs based on priority.
The deadline to comment on the rules is December 14.
