There is a considerable demand for affordable housing in New Mexico.
According to the Farmington Daily Times, a new low-income apartment complex recently opened in Farmington, New Mexico, which will provide affordable housing for dozens of residents.
Low-income renters who live at La Terraza Apartments pay 60 percent of the market value of the apartment and also receive a utility credit.
Mayor Tommy Roberts stated there is a considerable demand for low-income housing in the county, which may lead to further projects in the future, the report states.
Additionally, state Senator Nancy Rodriguez said more needs to be done to get additional affordable housing projects started in the area.
"The lack of affordable housing is a huge issue all over New Mexico. And what people aren't as aware of is the ripple effect it causes in communities. The problem is so huge it may seem like we aren't making strides as quickly as we could be," said Rodriguez.
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development recently stated it will provide $28 million in grants for affordable housing projects nationwide. New Mexico received roughly 10 percent of this money.
