Northern California housing counselors strategize
HOUSING/HEALTH NEWS
By Victoire Chochezi, public relations communications coordinator
Because of the nation’s severe housing crisis, those who offer counseling and assistance to potential homeowners and renters are particularly challenged to serve all those in need. One particular segment that requires more attention these days is foreclosure counseling.
Retreat participant takes notes during SWOT and goals training
On Sept. 10, Northern California Housing Counseling Network and steering committee members took time out from their always hectic schedules to spend several hours at their first retreat, held in Modesto, California.
At the retreat, approximately 35 network members reviewed their mission, participated in a Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats (SWOT) analysis and set goals for 2011. Members who participated include U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Fannie Mae, Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco NeighborWorks Pacific District and RCAC. RCAC hosted the retreat and provided the facilitator.
Through this process, members realized that in addition to empowering individuals to become successful homeowners and renters, they also need to help them sustain homeownership or affordable housing, once they have obtained it.
One of the goals that came out of the retreat is that network members will develop a curriculum for foreclosure recovery.

One participant commented that it was a “Really great opportunity to exchange ideas that will enhance the network.”
The network actually has approximately 700 members who use its listserv to maintain connections to other practitioners and obtain helpful, up-to-date information for the job.
